The [Apply Clip] button is greyed out when placing footage in a Drop Zone.

When placing a video/image on the Drop Zone while browsing footage in the list mode of the Event browser, you need to pick a starting frame (even for static images) from the preview area above the clip list – the [Apply Clip] button will not be available until you do that.
